Year 1 and 2

September 2018

Classes 2B, 2F and 2KS

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school. We hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer break and that your child is excited about coming back to the start of a new school year. Children moving into Year 1 have had a great start and are enjoying having a similar routine to reception with a mix of continuous provision and more formal teaching. As the year progresses, teaching and groupings will change accordingly.

Theme – Autumn 1 All about me

  • Science – The Body: Senses, skeleton, exercise and healthy eating.
  • History – Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole
  • ICT – Basic skills, e-safety, use of internet for research and Textease
  • Art/DT – Colour mixing, observational drawing, collage – linked to portraits
  • Music – Shape Rhythms
  • RE – What does special mean to me/harvest/Christmas
  • PE – Ball skills

PE for 2B will be Tuesdays and Fridays.
PE for 2F will be Mondays and Tuesdays
PE for 2KS will be Tuesdays and Fridays.

All children will need named pumps/dark trainers, white t-shirt and black shorts for PE. As the weather becomes colder, children may prefer to wear black leggings/jogging trousers.

On Tuesdays all children to come into school in their P.E kits with their uniforms in their pump bags. Please could the children have a draw string bag for their P.E kit as a rucksack takes up too much space in the cloakroom.

Could we also ask that children have an art shirt for when we do the more “messy” activities.

Routines

The doors will open at 8.50am. Children should bring reading wallets, spelling books and water bottles into class.

Reading:

Reading books will be changed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please sign to say your child has read their book.

Please encourage your child to read a little every night; recording in the reading diary which pages your child has read. It is good to discuss the content/story with your child to ensure they fully comprehend. Also talk about any new vocabulary.

Spelling:

All children will bring home spellings to practise. These are based on the spelling patterns that are taught in class. Please practise these words with your children using the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ method. Children are to copy the list then write two sentences that incorporate the spellings from their list.

Dictation, including some of the new spellings and high frequency words, will be given once a week.

Visits:

The Year 2 children will be attending the Ilkley Literature Festival on 2nd October. Details to follow

Meet the Teacher:

We would like to invite parents into school on Thursday 13th September for a brief meeting to not only meet us but talk through new routines, homework and expectations. We will be putting together a pack explaining these areas. If any parent is unable to attend the meeting the pack will be sent home with your child.

If you have a child in KS2 could we ask you join us first and then head upstairs to see the KS2 teachers.

We look forward to working with you and your children in the coming year. Should you have any concerns about your child, please see a member of staff at the classroom doors at the end of the day. If more time is needed, we can arrange a convenient time to meet.

Yours sincerely

Mrs K Brown   Miss H Flaherty    Miss L King    Mrs R Schofield
